In Morano Calabro, nestled in the heart of the Pollino National Park, you can admire a stunning lavender field that reaches its peak bloom between June 20th and August 20th. An engaging guided tour will introduce you to over 50 species of lavender from various parts of Europe, including the native species known as “Loricanda.” From its cultivation, essential oils with various health benefits are produced, along with perfumes, candles, soaps, and much more.

The Solstitial Indicator of Eianina (Frascineto)

A delightful walk, surrounded by Mediterranean scrub and the view of towering rocky cliffs, will lead us to a fascinating clearing at the foot of the small Dolomites of Frascineto (Pollino National Park) in the locality of Eianina. Recent archaeoastronomy studies (still ongoing) strongly suggest that the area was used as a solstitial indicator. The site features a semicircular arrangement of stone blocks around a central boulder likely serving as a gnomon. Among other stones positioned close to the gnomon, two are notably aligned with the sunrise and sunset of the Winter Solstice. This site was a topic of discussion by the Italian Society of Archaeoastronomy at its most recent conference held in Florence last October.

The visit to Matera begins with a stroll through the city center, along Via del Corso and Via Ridola, with stops at the main churches: San Francesco d’Assisi, the Church of the Brotherhood of Purgatory, Santa Chiara, and the majestic Cathedral on Civita, the highest point dividing the Sassi of Matera. In Piazzetta Pascoli, the belvedere offers a panoramic view of the Sassi, and visitors can admire Palazzo Lanfranchi, home to the National Museum of Medieval and Modern Art, which incorporates the Church of Carmine and the seminary where Pascoli began his career. Continuing, you’ll find the “Goccia” by Kengiro Azuma, a symbol of water.

Discovering the Sassi of Matera

From here, the journey descends into the heart of the Sassi, specifically the Caveoso district. Following the main street, you’ll reach the viewpoint of the Matera Murgia and the Gravina, a deep canyon, as well as the Church of San Pietro Caveoso, perched above the square of the same name. Explore the history of the Sassi and its communal life by visiting a typical “cave house” carved into the rock, a historic dwelling complete with original tools and furnishings. The visit includes a rock-hewn church, adorned with extraordinary frescoes dating back to the 7th century. The ascent through the narrow alleys of the Sassi reveals glimpses, nooks, and squares that tell the millennia-old story of Matera, one of the world’s oldest cities.

The trail, one of the most fascinating and historically rich, begins at the Parco della Cessuta near the famous “Abisso del Bifurto,” a sinkhole 683 meters deep. The path winds through typical Mediterranean vegetation, intersecting the ancient route once traveled by pilgrims to reach the Sanctuary. In spring, these areas bloom with rare plants such as the Paeonia Peregrina and Dictamnus Alba.

Endless Panoramas

The route, which is very accessible, offers breathtaking views of the Ionian coast and the Sibari plain. At the end of the trail, an awe-inspiring sight comes into view: the renowned Sanctuary of Santa Maria delle Armi, considered one of the most important medieval monastic complexes in Calabria. Perched majestically on the rocky slopes of Mount Sellaro (elevation 1,439 meters above sea level), this evocative historical structure houses the image of the Madonna, discovered inside the cave. The visit allows us to admire artworks and frescoes from various historical periods.

The Castle of Roseto Capo Spulico, firmly perched on the cliff, dates back to the 10th century. As noted by Saint Vitale from Castronuovo, it was on the “Petrae Roseti” that the Saint is said to have founded a monastery. On the ruins of this sacred building, the “Castrum Petrae Roseti” was erected in the 11th century by the Normans.

The Many Lives of the Fortress

At that time, the castle marked the border between the domains of Robert Guiscard and his brother Roger II (1105-1154), father of Constance of Hauteville, heir to the Kingdom of Sicily and mother of Frederick II Hohenstaufen (1194-1250). In the 13th century (1229), previously a Templar Order temple, it was confiscated by Frederick II from the Knights Templar as retaliation for their betrayal during the Sixth Crusade in the Holy Land (1228). The castle was restored and repurposed as a military stronghold. Frederick himself, deeply attached to the castle, assigned the territory of Porta Roseti to his illegitimate son Manfred in his will, as recorded in “Da Monumenta Germaniae Historia, Legu, Sectio IV: Tomus II, n. 274.” Meanwhile, all castles, and particularly the “templar Petrae Roseti,” were bequeathed to his legitimate sons, who would also become Kings of Jerusalem. Visiting this captivating structure, overlooking a stunning stretch of the Ionian coast, remains one of the most beloved activities for visitors.
